Legion (2010)

Director Scott Stewart makes an attempt to interpret his own vision of the apocalypse in this film. Starring some more famous acts like Charles S. Dutton, Dennis Quaid, and Paul Bettany, the film starts off with the angel Michael making his way down to earth, proceeding the cut off his own wings as some sort of act of defiance. From there, the story becomes somewhat puzzling and nonsensical…The viewer is given a few hints from the angel Michael that his ‘boss’ is upset with humanity, and that everyone needs to be wiped out. I suppose we’re to imagine that it’s because we’ve been terrible and have provoked some serious retribution. Although one has to wonder why it would happen now of all times, when humanity has been pretty lousy throughout existence. In another part of the state, a group of people are stuck at a diner/gas station after a series of bizarre events (insect swarms, telephone lines down) prevent them from leaving. From here on, you can pretty much throw out the story and any characterization.

Michael explaining:

Michael arrives and tells everyone that they’re all in danger, and that he’s here to protect one of the women who is pregnant. We find out that this soon to be baby is special, and that nothing must happen to the women before he is born, or humanity is forever doomed. Then it’s pretty much an angelic version of Rambo, with people possessed by angels attacking the gas station for the rest of the movie. At one point, Gabriel, another one of the boss’s left hand men comes down to finish off the job, but he can’t seem to finish it off either. Michael fights Gabriel, Michael dies, comes back, saves the day, baby lives, the end.

So basically, Legion is simply an action movie, with very little story or character development, which is sad since there were some capable actors in the film. If the director pursued a more story driven approach, this movie could have been so much better. Instead we have a below average action film that leaves the viewer with a lot of questions. It looked like it was trying to be a more steroid bound version of a much better movie “The Prophecy”. I’d recommend this only for hardcore fans of religious style fantasy/horror flicks, otherwise stay away.

Happy you enjoyed it Dac, I really wanted to like it, but I’ve been spoiled by other movies like ‘The Prophecy” to enjoy this one. If you have any free time, check out ‘the prophecy’ with Christopher Walken, there’s like 5 in the series, but watch the first one. That’s the best.

Ha! I finally saw this movie… I thought it was great, it had that low budget feel to it but it was still very entertaining to me. It didn’t take long for the action to get started and it stayed at a moderate level throughout the movie. I enjoyed it. You guys gave a great review on it.
